Phoenix wip 5

Phoenix wip 5, originally uploaded by alida saxon.

Now that I have the trees and background reasonably stable, I needed to focus on the figure. I do tend to fall back to pencil on paper for these things. I do like the tablet, but there's a certain disconnect when drawing straight into computer - for me anyway. I've got a deadline on this, so I can't piddle away the hours practicing that area digitally.

From here I'll be tweeking the posture (I find it a bit stiff at the moment) lay in some basic colors, and toss him into the bigger canvas to start fitting him in.

Good guys, bad guys, you know we got our share
New comics today. A new installment of our look at the stupid side of super heroes in That's Just Super, and another peek into the seedy underbelly of funny animal comics in Making Tracks. You can read them both!

Next week: more Unfortunate Super Heroes.

QC Guest Week: Zach Weiner

Hey, sorry this is up so late! I had computer issues last night that prevented me from posting it on time. Anyway, I think it's worth the wait.

This guest strip is by Zach, author of the hilarious Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. I giggled like hell at this one, I hope you will too.

Stay tuned for more guest strips this week and into next, with even more gratuitous nudity and profanity!

Friday: Alanis Morrisette
  • "Carmen Queasy" - Maxim & Skin

Something from the last days of Gen X (remember them?) popular culture,
with the kind of glossy musical sneer that was typical at the time. Lyrics here.

Features Maxim a.k.a. the Black guy in Prodigy and Skin a.k.a. the Black chick in Skunk Anansie. BTW, dust her in white greasepaint and she's a dead-on cast for Asajj Ventress, as originally conceived. Goddamn Lucas *sighs* Okay, nerdrage passed.

She's kinda overworking her lip synching and is obviously self-seduced by those
single white false eyelashes. But c'mon.. this was the time of Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals.

For reference, this was a year before Jill Scott's "A Long Walk" and India Irie's "Video". Yay for Black folk getting their rockstar on :)

  • "Voodoo People" - The Prodigy

Speaking of The-Time-Before-The-Death-Of-Irony, here's a non-"Firestarter" gem by The Prodigy proper. Omg the 'tude is so in my face! Fight Club!

  • "Blew" - Miyavi

A good way to bring this all up to now is this recording of Japanese singer Miyavi. In typical fashion, Japan is late to the party (grunge!) but makes up for it with amazing attention to craft and details.

This is a pretty frickin' good emulation of Cobain singing, plus I think he has better guitar chops (the tambourine on his foot(!)). Plus, dude's personal give-a-fuck style is just aces. I dig the double up on the caps; if one hat is awesome, two(2) is awsomer! Of course it reduces everything to simply another style filter, but when it's done so well, how can you complain? *rocks out* I can't wait for next decade's Japanese version of The Arcade Fire, omg can you imagine! *swoons*

  • "Crying At The Discoteque" - Alcazar

Hmm. Furries ruining everything. Aside from that, this current track is too close to the bone to be more than an actual weak disco revival. Needs more and bolder French house low-pass filter knob-twiddling. And actual fursuits. Cheap furry solution is cheap. Has potential as fodder for a Justice remix, I suppose. Included only to show how today's ironic posturing is just trite and goofy compared to how Gen X rocked it.

  • "Sexx Laws" - Beck

Not to end on a bad note like that, here.. have some Beck (like, before the creepy Scientology angle was common knowledge). This is how you do it. Ah, those pre-9/11 days. Makes me want to run out, get pierced and tattooed, and then brag about it on IRC #bdsm.

    Oh, wait...

    I'll show you Fire Nation
I usually think of myself as Earth and Silber as Fire (especially because he totally has the hots for Azula), but he disagrees and is convinced that due to my hot headed personality and his mellow compliment, the kingdoms should be reversed.

I'll show him >:C (such a Fire Nation thing to say, I know)

Wow, when I don't draw for a month my anatomy goes to shit. Well, lesson learned.

    mac cheese miner
    its all in the cheese
    Notes :
I quite like this particular recipe because it's quite simple and roughly as healthy as being hit by a bus.

    750ml Milk
    300g Macaroni Pasta
    50g Plain Flour
    50g Salted Butter
    100g Grated Cheddar cheese
    100g Grated Gruyere cheese
    5-10g Cubed Bavarian/Smoked cheese
    1-2 Chopped Red Onions
    1-2 Grated cloves of Garlic
    Salt, Black Pepper, Cayenne Pepper
    a handful of chopped Broccoli

    Preparation :
Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6 and grease a large ovenproof dish of some description.

The recipe I use suggests heating the milk as it makes the white sauce less likely to clump. You can do this in a saucepan for a couple of minutes on a low heat. You want it so it's warm and slightly steaming, but not so much that the milk boils. Pour it into a jug and save it for later.

    Making the Dish:
    1. Fry the onions and garlic in a pan with a little olive oil. Once they're nice and brown, remove from the pan and set aside for later.

    2. Cook the macaroni as it describes on the packet. Usually you can put it on to cook and then make the white sauce.

The dish is based around a white sauce. Firstly you'll have to make a Roux, which is a thick, dry butter/flour paste.

    3. Add the butter to a large saucepan and melt.
    4. Add the flour to the butter and stir with a wooden spoon until all the flour has disappeared and you're left with a paste. It's very important to cook the roux for a minute or so to avoid making a floury white sauce.

The mixture should become a lighter colour as it cooks. If it gets darker, your heat is too high.

    5. Carefully add 1/4 of the milk to your roux and stir. Once you're confident the mixture has been blended, add the next quarter and switch to a whisk. Continue this process until all the milk has been added and all the ingredients have been blended.
    6. Season your sauce to taste with the salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper.
    7. Raise the heat slightly on the sauce and add the cheeses a handful at a time, making sure the last batch has melted before adding the next.

You'll probably notice that your sauce will begin to thicken quite a lot.

The thickness of the sauce (and the resulting macaroni cheese) will depend on how much you reduce your sauce at this point. I like to reduce it so it's the consistency of cream, but if you prefer runnier cheese, I don't think it will kill you.

    8. Once the white sauce is ready, stir in your fried onions, garlic and raw broccoli.

    9. Drain the macaroni and pour into the ovenproof dish. Ladle your sauce over the pasta and mix well. Grate some cheese over the top.

    10. Put the dish in the oven for 20 minutes or until the cheese has melted and has turned golden brown.

Hopefully everything has gone according to plan and now you have a hearty macaroni cheese with a variety of interesting colours, flavours and textures.

Web Video Marketing: Trends, Techniques, and Copywriting Tips
Just listened in to this teleconference seminar about video marketing. Thought there might be some relevant insights when Do is ready to get with the marketing. Gotta compete in a post-Wick vodcast world, after all. ;) Loose personal notes on what the talking heads said:

    --------

Relevance for Do: Undetermined. Possibly a tutorial series detailing each step of the system, supplemented by motion graphics. Or, in a more marketing vein, a podcast anthology of letters to the temple accompanied by illustrations, Reading Rainbow style.
